How To Develop More Mindfulness

Over the last few years I have become more aware of just how important mindfulness is if you want to live a happy and healthy life. For the uninitiated, mindfulness is the reference to a state of self awareness and self consciousness so that you essentially live in a state of presence and focus. At least that’s my very simplistic take on it.

Many of you will have heard of author and podcaster, Tim Ferriss. If you haven’t then I highly recommend looking him up as a great source of inspiration on a variety of topics. He did a podcast late last year discussing mindfulness and some of his tips (he’s a bit of a guru when it comes to this stuff). I highly encourage listening to this particular podcast if you interested in the topic. There was however, one particular tip that I found to be especially useful that I would like to share. It was using a daily journal.

His recommended take on a daily journal is in a question and answer format and goes like this;

Morning

  • What is a relationship you have valued in the past?

  • Name one thing you are grateful for today (my personal question in addition to Tim’s that I use interchangeably with the above question)

  • Name an opportunity you have today?

  • Write down one great thing that happened yesterday.

  • Observe and describe in detail one simple thing that is nearby.

Night

  • Name an amazing thing that happened today?

  • How could today have been better?

In total this should take you no longer then 5 minutes in the morning and night. I advise writing them down, don’t just think about the answers. There is something in the process of writing that makes you place more focus on the questions. I use a dairy that has a page for everyday and personally prefer hand writing.

I have done this almost every day since the beginning of the year. I find it an excellent way to clarify your thoughts and bring presence and focus into the day. It actually can be quite energising. In fact I had stopped using it for all of April (as a test) and observed a significant lack of all these things and thus have started again.

It’s simple, easy and costs you nothing. Just give it a go for a few weeks and see what you notice. You never know how it might improve your life.
