Sitting in a Poor Seat? Achy back? Try this simple pose!

So many of us sit for a living. Every day we’re at our desks for hours at a time, hunched over the computer—encouraging a head down, shoulders slumped position. Whilst getting your seat right (as we discuss in our sitting, sleeping & standing workshops) is the real way to solve this problem, sometimes circumstances can make that difficult. Brugger’s Relief Pose is an easy way to temporarily take some of the load off our back.

What is Brugger’s Relief Pose?

Named after Swiss neurologist Alios Brugger and invented in the 1950’s, Brugger’s Relief Pose is a simple exercise you can do a few times throughout the day to strengthen your muscles and relieve back pain. Brugger’s Pose is also a great tension reliever. Its most commonly practiced while seated, but can be modified to be done standing or even while riding in a car.

This soothing exercise is recommended by Dr Hasan Helou at our Watsonia practice:

“Brugger’s Relief Pose is definitely an effective way to improve your posture throughout the day,” he explains. “It feels good, and with regular practice and chiropractic care, it can help combat future back and spinal conditions, like degenerative disc and joint disease.”

What are the steps?

Dr. Hasan Helou recommends that those of us who work in a seated position for the majority of the day practice Brugger’s Relief Pose for 10 seconds every half hour or so.

Here’s how you do it:

What are the benefits?

You might feel a little silly trying it out at first but the benefits of Brugger’s Relief Pose is worth it. Brugger’s helps you avoid that tense, strained and knotty feeling that’s so common at the end of a workday. Do your back a favour and set the timer on your computer or phone to remind you that it’s time for Brugger’s Relief Pose.
